Short Story to Screenplay

I'm thinking of writing a script based on a short story, but don't know about copyrights, it is copyrighted in 1980. I don't know if it is legal, and don't know how to get in touch with the buy who wrote the story.......

Is it all strictly a memory or do you have a copy of it somewhere?

If you have a copy of it somewhere you should have enough information to attempt looking it up.

If it's just a memory it's your memory. You're not likely to get all the details as you read them and under no circumstances should you attempt to. Create your own bastardized version but don't let it become parody. This is how Sammy Hagar wrote a lot of his songs.
